I think this is not a real story. Connie does not interested in men but she wants to sattisfy her ego because her mother always depresses connie. She says that she was not a beautiful girl. Therefore, she wanted to talk with men and also because of that she didn’t say no to Arnold at the first time. We can guess that she does not like her mother at the beginning of the story. However at the end of the story we can see that she understands that she liked her mother. So due to that she sacrificed her self. Since Arnold threathed her to kill her family, she became upset.
